Beneath every particular belonging is a deeper one — the shared fact of being human, of entering this life helpless and leaving it, of navigating the same elemental questions of love, loss, meaning, and mortality. This universal community cannot substitute for particular belonging, but it can receive and hold you when particular communities have failed. The mystic tradition I come from was built on this recognition: that the deepest belonging is beyond every boundary.
