Addiction and parenting

Addiction in a family distorts everything — trust, safety, predictability, and the fundamental question of whether love is reliable. Children raised in the presence of addiction often become extraordinarily competent at reading danger and managing others' emotions, and extraordinarily bad at trusting their own needs. The parent in recovery who names this honestly is already doing the most important thing.
