The African communal approach to child-raising is embedded in a truth the isolated nuclear family has paid dearly to ignore: children need a village, and a village is built, not assumed. In many African traditions, the child belongs not only to the parents but to the extended network of kin and community. This distributes both the burden and the joy in ways that sustain everyone.
