A festival is a community deciding, all at once, that the ordinary rules are suspended and beauty is mandatory — which may be the most political act a village can take. Nasreddin loved festivals because they were the one time the powerful and the poor were equally ridiculous, which he considered the natural order temporarily restored. To celebrate together is to say: the life we share is worth marking, and we are not too busy to mark it.
