Forests — ancient and new

Old forests have a quality that new forests take centuries to develop: something in the accumulated life, the layered time, the shadows that have been shadows longer than anyone has been watching them. Nasreddin valued old things for what they had survived; a forest that has not been cut is a record of everything that passed through it. To walk in an ancient forest is to walk inside a form of memory that does not require language.
