Grief and gratitude — the paradox

It seems paradoxical that gratitude should have any place in grief, and forced gratitude is one of the cruelest things that can be said to someone mourning. But many people who have carried grief across years report that gratitude and grief coexist — that the same awareness of loss that generates sorrow also generates a fierce thankfulness for having loved and been loved at all. This domain examines the paradox honestly, without rushing anyone toward gratitude and without denying its genuine presence in mourning.
