Hope as temporal orientation

Hope is not optimism — it is the decision to remain open to a future that has not yet closed. Many traditions — the Hebrew prophetic hope, the Buddhist aspiration, the African concept of communal becoming — ground hope not in probability but in commitment. This gives it a different quality than prediction.
