Making friends as an adult — the difficulty

Adult friendship is harder to begin than childhood friendship for the same reasons it is often deeper: adults are more defended, more scheduled, more particular. The infrastructure that made childhood friendship easy — shared captivity, repeated contact, enforced proximity — simply does not exist. Building a new friendship as an adult requires a kind of deliberate vulnerability that feels strange precisely because it is not spontaneous.
