Mob psychology and belonging to a cause

The belonging available in a crowd united by righteous purpose is among the most intoxicating available to human beings — and among the most dangerous. The individual self dissolves into something larger that feels, in the moment, like clarity. What gets lost is exactly the hesitation, the particular perspective, the individual conscience that gives belonging its meaning. Belonging to a cause is real; belonging to a mob is its dark mirror.
