Northern European clock culture

The mechanical clock changed the organization of human life more than almost any other technology — and it was European monasteries that first imposed it on daily rhythm, measuring hours so that prayer could be regular. The Protestant ethic later made time-keeping a moral virtue, not merely a monastic one. This is worth knowing before deciding the clock is neutral.
