Not all giving achieves what it intends, and some giving achieves the opposite — reinforcing dependency, distorting local economies, or substituting donor satisfaction for recipient need. Effective philanthropy requires the discipline to ask what actually helps and to follow the evidence even when it contradicts the instinct toward visible, legible generosity.
