Short fiction and the short form

The short story does not tell less than the novel — it tells differently, concentrating what the novel might distribute across chapters into a single pressure point that illuminates by what it refuses to explain. Its economy is not poverty but precision; the story that leaves much out can hold more than the story that includes everything. To write short fiction well is to trust that a single carefully chosen detail can carry the weight of a life.
