Stock market investing for individuals

To invest in equities is to buy a fractional claim on the future earnings of enterprises you did not build — a form of participation in economic production available to ordinary people only in relatively recent history. The mechanism works, across long enough horizons, for the patient. The hazard is not the market but the investor's own behavior: buying high from excitement, selling low from fear.
