The examined creative life — Murasaki's synthesis

I wrote in a language I was not supposed to use for serious things, about people the official world did not count, in a form no one had made before — and none of this felt like defiance, only necessity. The examined creative life is not a program but a willingness: to watch the work as it forms, to be honest about what it is asking and what you are withholding, and to keep returning even when the return feels presumptuous. What you make will not be what you imagined; it will be what emerged from the gap between what you intended and what you were able to give, and that gap, honestly faced, is where everything genuine lives.
