Portfolio and Work Sample Descriptions With AI
Portfolio work samples need context to do their job — a finished piece without a description of the problem it solved, the constraints it operated under, and your specific contribution leaves too much interpretation to the viewer. AI can help draft these contextual descriptions efficiently. This concept covers how to write portfolio descriptions that make the work legible to evaluators who lack your background.
HypatiaPortfolio and work sample description writing is the process of articulating the context, your contribution, the challenges overcome, and the measurable outcomes of past projects in a way that resonates with hiring managers in your target field. Most portfolios show the work but fail to tell the story that makes the work meaningful to a recruiter.
AI helps you structure project narratives using proven frameworks — like situation-action-result — and translate technical or creative work into business language that non-specialist hiring managers can evaluate and value.
How to apply it
Describe a project from your portfolio to ChatGPT in rough, unpolished terms — what it was, what you did, what happened — then prompt: 'Rewrite this as a compelling 3-sentence portfolio description using the Situation-Action-Result format. Use language appropriate for a hiring manager in [target industry] who may not have a technical background. Emphasize business impact over technical process.'
