Prose Density Modulation in AI Draft Editing
Prose density—how much information or sensory detail you pack into a given stretch of text—directly affects pacing and reader experience, and you can use AI to deliberately adjust it across a draft. Identifying passages that feel either too spare or too dense, then prompting the system to rewrite them with specific density targets, lets you fine-tune the rhythm of how a reader moves through your story.
HypatiaProse density modulation is the technique of instructing AI to consciously shift between dense, detail-rich passages and spare, fast-moving sections within a single document, matching the information load of each paragraph to the narrative function it serves. It treats prose weight as a deliberate craft lever rather than an accident of generation.
Editors and authors who use this approach find that AI-assisted drafts achieve better pacing because the system has been prompted to recognize when a scene demands slow immersion versus when momentum requires stripping language down to pure action and forward motion.
