Tone Calibration Prompting for Academic Voice
Rather than letting AI default to conversational tone, show it examples of successful papers from your field and ask it to match that register and voice. This makes AI drafts feel intentional within your discipline instead of sounding like a chatbot trying to sound smart.
HypatiaTone calibration prompting is the practice of explicitly instructing an AI to adjust the formality, discipline-specific vocabulary, and rhetorical register of your writing to match what is expected in a particular academic field or assignment type.
Many students write in a casual or conversational register without realizing it, and tone calibration prompting trains you to recognize the difference while using AI as a real-time editor that can shift your draft from sounding like a blog post to sounding like a scholarly argument.
