The Courage to Choose Differently

Sor Juana's life required extraordinary courage—to write and publish despite institutional opposition, to defend her intellectual work despite social condemnation, to remain true to her convictions despite personal cost. Ethical consumption requires similar courage, though on a different scale. It takes courage to wear secondhand clothing when fashion pressures dictate new purchases, to research companies and withdraw from convenient brands, to pay more for fairly-made goods, to resist the constant messaging that consumption brings happiness or status. Consumer culture relies on conformity and the path of least resistance; ethical consumption requires choosing the harder path. Sor Juana's example teaches that integrity is worth the cost. When we make conscious consumption choices that deviate from social norms, we participate in a kind of intellectual and moral independence. We affirm that our values matter more than convenience, that justice matters more than trend-following, and that authentic participation in the world matters more than the false ease of unconscious consumption.
