Why It Matters

For Sor Juana, knowledge was not abstract accumulation but a practice intimately connected to human dignity and justice. Applied to animals, this transforms how we approach biology, ecology, and ethology: not as domination through classification, but as compassionate witnessing of other lives. To truly know an animal—its social bonds, intelligence, fear, joy, suffering—is to grant it moral reality in a world designed to render it invisible. Sor Juana's own intellectual work involved careful observation and synthesis, treating ideas as worthy of respect. We honor animals similarly by studying them without instrumentalizing them, by recognizing their complexity and agency. This knowledge becomes a form of justice: the act of seeing, documenting, and publicly acknowledging what animals are and experience. When we genuinely know a creature's capacity for suffering, its family attachments, its problem-solving abilities, we cannot maintain ethical distance. Knowledge becomes the pathway to moral responsibility, transforming compassion from sentiment to intellectual commitment grounded in reality.
