Knowledge Production Under Constraint

Sor Juana's remarkable scholarship was produced despite severe constraints: limited access to books, restricted institutional positions, constant demands on her time for duties unrelated to scholarship, and pressure to abandon intellectual pursuits entirely. Knowledge production under constraint is central to understanding structural gender inequality: women scholars, scientists, and thinkers historically worked with fewer resources, less protected time, and greater institutional resistance. Their accomplishments must be understood not as individual genius overcoming limitations but as evidence of structural inequality that demands resources be redistributed. When women produce less published work, patents, or citations, this often reflects not lower capability but lower access to the conditions enabling knowledge production. Time spent on unpaid care work, interrupted by family demands, working outside formal institutions, or functioning without mentorship all constrain productivity. Recognizing knowledge production under constraint reframes the narrative: rather than asking why women accomplish less, we ask why women have fewer resources. This concept demands that institutions actively redistribute time, funding, institutional space, and mentorship to address historical disadvantages.
