Why It Matters

Sor Juana's survival depended on patronage: the Viceroy's wife provided protection and resources, enabling her to write and think without institutional censorship. Yet patronage was also constraint—she remained dependent on favor. Her life illustrates both the liberating and limiting aspects of non-wage arrangements. Libertarian justice must recognize that freedom includes diverse economic models beyond employment: patronage, commission, cooperative ownership, and voluntary support networks. Sor Juana's tradition shows how patronage, when freely entered, can protect intellectual independence better than institutional employment demanding ideological conformity. However, it requires genuine alternatives and the ability to refuse particular patrons. Applied to modern platforms and creators, this principle argues for protection of diverse funding models—subscriptions, gifts, commissions, endowments—that let creators choose relationships preserving their autonomy. The goal is not eliminating dependence (unavoidable in human life) but multiplying pathways and ensuring the freedom to exit exploitative arrangements without destitution.
