The Persona Beyond Roles

Sor Juana's identity was partly defined by her role as nun and intellectual, yet she cultivated a self that exceeded these categories. In aging, particularly after retirement from career or primary caregiving, many people face a disorienting question: who am I without the roles that structured my identity? This concept invites the discovery of the persona beyond functions. The practice involves asking: If I were not a parent, professional, provider, or caregiver, who would I be? What interests and curiosities exist independent of external expectations? What kind of person do I actually want to be in these final years? Sor Juana's model suggests that this deeper self is not discovered through social approval but through honest inward attention. This person beyond roles may be quite different from who you have presented to the world. Approaching death makes space for this discovery because external validation matters less. The paradox is that removing social roles can reveal not emptiness but a more authentic and singular self.
