Why It Matters

Sor Juana never claimed to have arrived at final truth about herself, God, or the cosmos. Her writings show constant questioning, revision, and deepening—what she called the endless pursuit of knowledge as prayer. This mirrors both her intellectual tradition (Aristotelian philosophy as questioning) and her spiritual tradition (mysticism as perpetual approach toward the divine). The Unfinished Project rejects the idea that authenticity means discovering a true self and then staying faithful to it. Instead, authenticity is the ongoing process of honestly examining who you are becoming, how your understanding develops as you encounter new traditions and perspectives, and remaining willing to revise your self-conception. For Authenticity across traditions, this is liberating: it means you don't have to choose one tradition and remain static within it, nor do you have to achieve perfect integration across all influences immediately. Growth is the point. You become more authentic through the practice of regular self-examination, honest dialogue, openness to being changed by what you learn. This framework validates the messy, non-linear path of many people who genuinely draw from multiple traditions while acknowledging they haven't figured it all out.
