The Emptiness of Algorithmic Abundance

Laozi observed that when you fill a cup constantly, nothing settles; the water becomes murky. Social media platforms maximize engagement through infinite scroll, creating the illusion of abundance while delivering fragmented, surface-level content. We consume endlessly yet feel spiritually empty, scrolling late into loneliness. This concept applies Taoist emptiness differently: not as the receptive void that allows wisdom to enter, but as the drained feeling of quantity without substance. Algorithms serve engagement metrics, not human flourishing. True nourishment comes from fewer, deeper interactions and meaningful content that allows contemplation. By intentionally limiting consumption—reading deeply rather than scrolling widely, having longer conversations with fewer people, leaving space between engagements—we restore the natural rhythm of connection. Emptiness here becomes a choice: uncluttering the digital space to make room for what actually fills the heart.
