The Paradox of Algorithmic Neutrality

Taoist philosophy embraces paradox as fundamental truth: the named Tao is not the eternal Tao. Similarly, an algorithm claiming neutrality already reveals its bias—the claim itself is a choice. Laozi would recognize that every rule, every weight, every threshold reflects someone's perspective on politics and power. In algorithmic politics, the pretense of neutrality obscures the real debate about whose values should be embedded in systems. Rather than fighting this paradox, Taoist wisdom suggests acknowledging it openly: that all political algorithms reflect choices, and the conversation should center on making those choices explicit, democratic, and revisable. This transparency paradoxically creates more trustworthy systems than false claims of objectivity, as users understand the framework rather than assuming hidden neutrality.
