Paradox in Enhancement Ethics

The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao—Laozi's opening warns against false certainty. Biotech enhancement is riddled with paradoxes: extend lifespan and rob it of urgency; remove suffering and diminish compassion; optimize performance and lose spontaneity; achieve designer traits and question identity. Rather than resolving these tensions, Taoist wisdom suggests holding them in creative tension. The sage doesn't choose between optimization and authenticity but sees how each contains the other. Enhancement ethics, then, becomes not a set of rules but a practice of navigating paradox. This means building in reversibility where possible, maintaining uncertainty in enhancement timelines, and accepting that some contradictions cannot be solved—only lived. The wisest biotech approaches acknowledge their own internal contradictions, resist false certainty, and remain humble before the Tao of embodied life.
