Reverse Causality: Effect Before Cause

Laozi observed that beginnings contain their endings, and effects shape causes before consequences appear. This paradoxical view of causality reframes anticipation: instead of predicting forward from current causes, notice how possible futures already leave traces backward into the present. Weak signals, anomalies, and marginalia often represent the future's gravity pulling on the present. By studying what's barely visible—emerging behaviors, abandoned technologies gaining new context, cultural contradictions—we detect which futures are gaining momentum. This inverts traditional forecasting: rather than extrapolating trends, identify which futures are already exerting pull. In technology, early adopters represent the future's backward reach. In markets, unusual customer behaviors signal emerging demand. In time itself, this teaches patient attention to subtle currents. When you stop pushing prediction forward and instead listen for the future's backward whisper, anticipation becomes less analytical and more perceptual. You recognize what's already here, just not yet evenly distributed.
