Te and the Integrity of Your Mortal Path

Te means virtue in the sense of authentic power—your nature fully expressed. It is distinct from external morality imposed by society. Laozi taught that most people sacrifice their te, their essential character, to achieve status, wealth, or approval. This inner betrayal is a kind of death before death. Memento mori becomes a call to restore integrity: knowing your time is limited, why would you spend it becoming someone else? The Taoist sage uses mortality awareness as permission to align life with inner truth. This is not selfish; it is recognition that your unique expression of the Tao can only flow authentically through you. If you die having compromised your te for others' values, you will have missed your own life. The practice becomes brutal honesty: Are you living your values or society's? Are you expressing your nature or a purchased persona? Death clarifies urgency: there is no time for the slow erosion of authenticity. By remembering mortality, you gain courage to live as your actual self, not the self others prefer. This transforms memento mori into a liberating call to integrity.
