Why It Matters

The Taoist sage acts in accordance with right timing—the concept of timeliness woven through the Tao Te Ching. In nature, seeds sprout when conditions align, not by schedule. Applied to technology and children, this suggests that rigid rules—"no phones until age 13"—ignore individual development. One child may be ready for social media exploration at twelve; another benefits from waiting until fifteen. The Taoist approach watches for readiness: Can this child use technology without losing sleep or friendships? Do they show self-awareness about their own needs? Rather than imposed timelines, observe the child's ripeness. This doesn't mean no guidance; instead, it means guidance flows from understanding each child's unique developmental moment. Parents become attentive observers, introducing tools when the child's maturity, curiosity, and circumstances align—timing over rigid rules.
