Transparent Opacity

Taoist philosophy embraces mystery and the unknowable; the Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao. Technology presents a peculiar opacity: algorithms determine what children see, yet these mechanisms remain intentionally obscured. Rather than pretending systems are transparent or despairingly treating them as impenetrable, wisdom invites discernment. Parents can teach children to recognize when they're influenced without understanding how, to notice pattern without demanding complete knowledge. This mirrors Taoist acceptance of the paradoxical: we navigate the world through incomplete understanding. Teaching critical awareness—noticing when content is curated, recognizing engagement design, questioning algorithmic selection—develops wisdom about opacity itself. Children need not master code to understand they inhabit constructed worlds; they need frameworks for navigating mystery with eyes open.
