Tui: Ancestral Debt and Reciprocal Time

Tui (推) means to push forward or transmit. In ancestral work, it represents the debts and gifts that flow bidirectionally across time. You inherit your ancestor's strengths and struggles; they depend on you to honor, complete, or transform what they could not. This is not guilt but reciprocity—the recognition that time moves both ways. A parent's unfulfilled dream doesn't haunt you as blame; it calls to you as possibility. An ancestor's suffering asks for witness and meaning-making. Laozi teaches that wu wei includes accepting what flows to us without resistance while honoring our role in the lineage. Tui reveals that ancestral time is not finished time—it is ongoing dialogue. By understanding our role in transmitting forward, we stop being victims of the past and become conscious participants in its redemption.
