The Uncarved Block of Consensus

Pu, the uncarved block, represents potentiality and simplicity before unnecessary ornamentation. In Laozi's philosophy, society becomes rigid when we carve away at natural harmony with rules and hierarchies. Applied to blockchain consensus, this wisdom warns against over-engineering. The most elegant consensus mechanisms—like nakamoto consensus—maintain simplicity and flexibility. Bitcoin's proof-of-work remains relatively unchanged because it preserves the uncarved block principle: it solves one problem cleanly without unnecessary layers. Conversely, systems that accumulate governance layers, emergency pauses, and administrative complexity move away from pu. Laozi teaches that complexity breeds fragility; decentralized systems thrive when consensus rules stay minimal and adaptive. The uncarved block reminds us that true decentralization means resisting the urge to micromanage every outcome. Instead, designers should create conditions where distributed nodes naturally converge on truth, remaining flexible enough to evolve without requiring centralized control or bureaucratic overhead.
