Uncarved Block of Consensus

Laozi's concept of pu—the uncarved block, representing original simplicity and potential—illuminates blockchain's evolution toward unnecessary complexity. Early Bitcoin was closer to pu: simple, elegant rules that anyone could understand. Modern networks add features, optimizations, and governance layers that carve away simplicity, fragmenting consensus into competing interests and special privileges. Pu suggests the deepest power lies in fundamental simplicity that contains vast potential. A blockchain returning to pu principles would strip away unnecessary complexity, reduce technical barriers to participation, and align incentives through straightforward rules rather than elaborate mechanisms. The Taoist insight: by removing what is unnecessary, the essential becomes visible and powerful. Many Layer-2 solutions and alternative consensus mechanisms attempt this—seeking the uncarved block beneath accumulated technical cruft.
