Pu, the uncarved block, represents potential in its pristine state before names, categories, and artificial divisions fragment it. In Taoist thought, the process of naming and categorizing actually limits reality by imposing human structure. Applied to brain-computer interfaces, this wisdom cautions against over-processing raw neural data too early. Many BCIs immediately filter, classify, and interpret neural signals through predetermined categories—thought categories, command types, intention labels. But this early carving loses information and imposes arbitrary structure. Laozi suggests instead preserving the uncarved block: collecting raw neural patterns in their natural, undivided form for as long as possible. Advanced BCIs that work with raw signal streams before aggressive classification often achieve better adaptability and more intuitive user experience. By respecting the integrity of unprocessed neural data, systems remain open to patterns and possibilities that rigid pre-categorization would eliminate. The user's neural activity speaks in its own language; BCIs that listen before interpreting discover richer communication than those that force data into predetermined boxes, embodying the principle that simplicity and wholeness precede complexity and division.
