Mirabai's relationship with her divine beloved holds this tension: Krishna is her soul's reflection and utterly other, intimately known and eternally mysterious. In human love relationships, this concept offers a mature framework: your beloved reveals you to yourself (mirror function) while remaining ultimately unknowable (mystery function). Communication honoring both dimensions avoids two traps: either fusion (losing the beloved's otherness) or disconnection (refusing to see self-reflection). When speaking with a beloved-as-mirror, we might say, 'I see my own capacity for joy in how you laugh.' When honoring beloved-as-mystery, we might say, 'I accept I cannot fully understand your inner world, and that deepens my respect.'
