The Beloved as Civilization: Devotion to What Remains

A reframing of civilization itself as the beloved—imperfect, fragile, worthy of love and grief precisely because of its fragility and incompleteness.

Why It Matters

In Mirabai's devotional tradition, the beloved—whether Krishna or the divine—was central. This relationship structure organized her entire being. For anticipatory grief, we can practice a parallel devotion: treating civilization as beloved, in all its imperfection. Not civilization as it should be or as we wished it, but as it actually is: flawed, creative, fragile, containing both beauty and violence. Loving the beloved Mirabai-style means loving without conditions, without demand for perfection, with full awareness of loss. It means grieving what it is and what it might cease to be. This transforms anticipatory grief from duty into practice rooted in love. We tend to civilization not because we must but because we love it: its music, its ideas, its people, its wildness. This love becomes the ground for genuine care, preservation, and renewal work.
