Why It Matters

Mirabai's bhakti tradition teaches that love does not require permanence to be real or redemptive. In anticipatory grief for civilization, bhakti offers a radical reframing: to witness the decline of what we cherish through the lens of devotion itself. Rather than numbing or catastrophizing, we pour conscious attention and love into our relationships, institutions, and natural world precisely because they are fragile. This transforms grief from paralysis into practice. Mirabai sang her longing for Krishna knowing separation was inherent to the form. Similarly, we can grieve civilization's trajectory while actively loving it into whatever comes next. Bhakti teaches that the heart's capacity to break is its capacity to transform.
