Bhava: Emotional Surrender and Embodied Feeling
Full-bodied emotional surrender to what moves you, preventing celibacy from becoming intellectualized or emotionally detached.
MiraBhava is the state of being in which emotion becomes a direct path to truth—not controlled, analyzed, or minimized but fully inhabited and lived. Mirabai did not think about her love for Krishna; she felt it so completely that her body danced, her voice sang, her whole being trembled with it. Applied to celibacy, bhava insists that authentic practice is not cold or dissociated. It requires full emotional presence, the willingness to feel grief, longing, joy, ecstasy, despair—whatever arises. Celibacy practiced without bhava becomes spiritual bypassing, using renunciation to avoid feeling. Bhava celibacy means you remain emotionally alive and vulnerable. You feel the ache of not having physical intimacy with a partner; you don't suppress it. You celebrate the joy of deep friendships; you let yourself be moved. You grieve losses; you do not pretend they don't matter. This emotional honesty and presence is what makes celibacy viable long-term—not as suppression but as full-bodied choice grounded in real feeling and real joy.
