Why It Matters

Though Mirabai was often isolated and persecuted, bhakti tradition is fundamentally communal. Devotees gather to sing, to witness each other's longing, to strengthen collective faith. This communal dimension is essential for anticipatory grief at the civilizational scale. Grief carried alone becomes unbearable and can calcify into despair or denial. Grief carried together becomes bearable and can catalyze action. Communities of practice around anticipatory grief create container for shared witnessing: circles where people name specific losses, rituals that mark ecological transitions, learning communities that study both the realities we face and the wisdom traditions that can guide us. These are not support groups in the therapeutic sense but spiritual communities where people practice together. They might gather for seasonal laments, to study and share poetry about loss, to plan regenerative action, to witness each other's transformation. Like Mirabai's bhakti communities, they affirm that love, grief, and longing are not shameful or pathological but sacred dimensions of being human. They strengthen individual practitioners while creating the collective coherence necessary for sustained cultural response to crisis.
