Community as Sacred Resistance

Mirabai gathered devotees despite social prohibition; anticipatory grief calls for building communities of practice that hold the truth together.

Why It Matters

Though Mirabai is often portrayed as a solitary mystic, she was surrounded by and nurtured community—other devotees, musicians, seekers drawn to her uncompromising love. These communities were acts of sacred resistance, gathering outside the bounds of approved society to practice a different way of being. Anticipatory grief for civilization requires the same. We cannot hold this grief alone. It will splinter us into despair or denial without communities of practice—groups of people willing to meet regularly, to name the losses together, to support each other's clarity and commitment, to imagine and build alternatives. Community as sacred resistance means creating spaces where anticipatory grief is acknowledged as appropriate and necessary, where we practice rituals together, where we learn from each other's attempts to live with integrity in a failing system. Mirabai teaches that the path is not individual transcendence but collective awakening. In our time, community becomes the vessel in which grief transforms into purpose, in which sorrow deepens bonds, and in which shared loss becomes the ground for shared creativity and resistance.
