The Courage to Love Impossibly

Mirabai's love for Krishna existed in a context of absolute impossibility: He was a god, not a human partner; He was already claimed by countless other devotees; He lived in a different realm entirely. By every practical measure, her love was doomed to unfulfillment. Yet she loved anyway—courageously, visibly, without guarantee of return. This speaks to the deepest truth about secure attachment: it requires the courage to be vulnerable without guarantee. Anxious attachment often masks a demand for certainty—if I do this right, if I love hard enough, if I make myself essential, then I'll be safe. But this is a kind of control. Secure attachment, by contrast, says: I will love even though loss is possible. I will be vulnerable even though you might leave. I will trust even though I cannot control the outcome. This is the courage Mirabai demonstrates. In romantic relationships, it means showing up authentically without needing assurance of forever; being committed without clinging; loving fully while holding the reality that all relationships are impermanent. This paradoxical courage is what transforms attachment from a survival mechanism into a spiritual practice.
