Mirabai continued singing to Krishna despite ridicule, family rejection, and no certainty of reciprocation. Her devotion was defiant—not because it guaranteed success but because she chose love over safety. This defiant devotion illuminates anticipatory grief: we can commit ourselves to civilization's flourishing, to justice and healing, not because we are guaranteed success but because these commitments reflect who we choose to be. The outcome is not guaranteed. Civilization may fragment; suffering may increase. Yet defiant devotion means we act, love, and grieve anyway—not from denial but from clarity. We refuse the false choice between naive hope and resigned despair. Mirabai models a third way: clear-eyed about suffering, radically committed to love, willing to be changed by both. For us, this means we can maintain genuine hope and effort for civilization while simultaneously grieving its fragility.
