Why It Matters

Mirabai abandoned respectability, marriage, and family for devotion. This was not escapism but radical freedom from the need to control how others perceived her or to secure a conventional future. In anticipatory grief, detachment from outcomes means releasing the fantasy that sufficient effort, policy, or individual choice can prevent systemic decline. This is liberating rather than paralyzing. When we stop demanding that our actions guarantee salvation, we can grieve authentically and act from genuine values rather than magical thinking. Mirabai's freedom came from loving something (Krishna) more than security. Applied to civilization, this becomes freedom to love the world, its peoples, and practices deeply—and to work toward justice and beauty—without the crushing burden of preventing the inevitable. The examined heart recognizes what it cannot control.
