Why It Matters

In bhakti, every interaction with the beloved is both complete in itself and preparation for deeper union. Mirabai prepared for her ultimate union with Krishna through years of singing, fasting, and love-practice. Applied to anticipatory grief, devotion as preparation means viewing the remaining time as sacred practice. How can we show up more fully? What acts of service, presence, or love have we deferred? Preparation here is not morbid pre-grieving but active honoring of the relationship while it exists. It might mean visiting more frequently, asking the questions we've avoided, documenting stories, or simply practicing the art of deep listening. This framework transforms anticipatory grief from passive waiting into active engagement. We prepare spiritually by releasing resentments, by practicing forgiveness, by deepening gratitude. We prepare practically by learning what they need, by understanding their wishes, by becoming the kind of person who can handle their absence with grace. Devotion as preparation makes the remaining time purposeful rather than merely suspended.
