Devotion Versus Attachment
Mirabai's distinction between genuine devotion (premabhakti) and clinging attachment, helping clarify what kind of love sustains trust versus what enables betrayal.
MiraBhakti philosophy distinguishes between premabhakti—love rooted in the other's truth and freedom—and attachment that grips, possesses, and demands. Mirabai's love for Krishna is devotion, not ownership. She celebrates his freedom even in his absence. This framework helps untangle the patterns that precede or follow betrayal: Are you devoted to the person's actual growth and truth, or attached to a fantasy of who they are? In affairs, attachment often masquerades as love—'I can't live without them'—while actually denying the beloved's autonomy and accountability. In recovery from betrayal, genuine devotion might mean loving someone while releasing the relationship. It means wanting their highest good rather than demanding they meet your needs. This distinction clarifies which forms of love are sustainable and which contain seeds of future suffering. True devotion includes the capacity to let go.
