Devotion Beyond Duty: Love as Freedom

Mirabai rejected the dutiful roles prescribed for a widow—grief-stricken, withdrawn, obedient—to pursue ecstatic devotion to Krishna on her own terms. Her freedom arose not from abandoning love but from choosing it radically and authentically. For Integration — not getting over but getting with — this concept teaches that true integration happens when we move beyond duty into genuine choice. Obligation creates brittle bonds that shatter under the pressure of loss or change. Chosen devotion, by contrast, becomes supple and sustaining. When we examine our hearts, we often discover we are carrying relationships through habit or guilt rather than love. The path forward is not abandonment but honest reckoning: Do I choose this? Can I love this person or loss freely? Mirabai's example invites us to ask whether our integration is authentic devotion or exhausted duty. Freedom and love intertwine when we stop performing and start genuinely choosing.
