Devotion as Chosen Practice
A framework for understanding commitment—to people, causes, or spiritual paths—as an ongoing choice rather than an obligation imposed from outside.
MiraMirabai chose her devotion to Krishna not because her family or society mandated it, but because her examined heart revealed it as her truth. This choice was radical: she could have obeyed her family or husband, but instead she practiced her own form of love. Devotion, in her tradition, is freedom—the freedom to commit to what calls you. This distinction matters for autonomy and togetherness: genuine devotion (to a partner, community, or cause) is only authentic when chosen freely and renewed consciously. It is not obligation or self-erasure. In modern relationships, this means distinguishing between love that expands you and relationships that constrain you. Mirabai's bhakti teaches that the examined heart knows the difference, and that true togetherness begins when two autonomous selves choose each other.
