Devotion to the Unmakeable

Mirabai devoted herself to Krishna—a beloved who could not be controlled, predicted, or manufactured. Her devotion was to surrender itself, to the impossible gap between self and Other. Industrial civilization is built on the assumption that everything is makeable: manageable, optimizable, within human control. Anticipatory grief reveals the bankruptcy of this project. Devotion to the Unmakeable invites us to redirect sacred attention toward what resists our engineering: the wild, the spontaneous, the truly other, the sacred. This might mean poetry, music, prayer, or simply sitting with mystery. By investing devotion in what cannot be owned or perfected, we decenter the frantic project of mastery and recover relationship with forces larger than ourselves. This practice is both an ecological wisdom and a spiritual anchor.
