The Double Truth of Longing

The coexistence of two truths: you can miss someone and still need distance; you can love and still say no.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's poetry holds contradictions in suspension. She sings of her love for Krishna while acknowledging his distance. She celebrates union while dwelling in separation. She does not resolve these tensions into false coherence. In relationships, people often believe they must choose: either you miss someone, or you maintain distance; either you love, or you set a boundary. This concept teaches the both/and truth. You can desperately miss your parent and still refuse their emotional enmeshment. You can love your partner and still need space. You can grieve a breakup and still know it was necessary. Mirabai's examined heart held these apparent contradictions as deepening rather than negating each other. The longing made the boundary meaningful; the boundary made the longing real. When you stop trying to resolve this double truth into single clarity, you become more honest, more flexible, and more human. You can honor complexity without losing your ground.
