Self-inquiry as a form of quiet resistance against systems that demand compliance, numbness, or conformity to false narratives.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's devotion was her resistance. By turning inward to examine her own experience and values, she rejected the roles assigned to her (dutiful wife, symbol of status, silent woman) and claimed her own truth. This quiet, persistent self-examination—continuing to ask what is real, what matters, what I actually believe—is a form of resistance that authoritarian systems cannot easily suppress because it appears private while remaining subversive. For anticipatory grief, the examined heart resists the official narratives of technological salvation, return to growth, or apocalyptic fatalism. It also resists the subtle coercion toward numbness—the cultural pressure to consume distraction, maintain normalcy, or perform hope we do not feel. By examining our actual experience, fears, and values regularly, we maintain cognitive independence even as propaganda intensifies. We also become harder to manipulate because we recognize our own patterns of denial and susceptibility. Mirabai's persistent inner examination allowed her to survive and even thrive in an oppressive context. In times of systemic instability, this practice becomes crucial: the examined heart that knows itself cannot be easily recruited for false solutions or paralyzed by despair.
